Artist Gordon Skinner the Subject of a Documentary About His Expressionist Paintings with a Social Message (Video)

Artist Gordon Skinner the Subject of a Documentary About His Expressionist Paintings with a Social Message (Video)

In an attempt to feed the curiosity that will forever be the hunger of my mind, in recent times I’ve delved quite a bit into the world of art. My fascination with the creative process has led me down an interesting path of some interesting contemporary artists, gallerists, curators and many others in the world of fine art. This past summer I shot a short documentary with abstract painter Robert Wilson which led me to attending the group show “Become a Collector” at the Fernando Luis Alvarez Gallery. This is where I saw the works of Gordon Skinner who had a painting and some drawings in the show. What stood out to me about his work, was that it was raw and full of detailed ideas and personal statements. The kind of art I liked was always rough around the edges and took a while to examine and absorb. I was never moved by paintings with precise lines and perfect shading, to me those things lacked imagination, personality and as far as I was concerned I might as well be looking at a photograph. So when I saw Gordon’s portrait painting “Fotolia”I felt instantly connected to it. It was simple, it was complicated and some of the elements boggled my mind as to how they were conceived.

Fotolia with name

I didn’t know what Fotolia meant, as it sat written just over the shoulder of this colorful figure, but it reminded me somehow of one of my favorite films City of God. City of God is a foreign film recorded in the Portuguese language about a kid who wants to be a photographer, growing up amidst the poverty and violence of the notorious favelas in Rio de Janiero. I think the connection may have come from the concept of watching a film in a language you don’t understand but visually seeing what’s going on and comprehending. That was precisely my reaction to Gordon’s Fotolia painting. I vaguely knew what the word meant, the obscurity made it more interesting, but the expression in the figure in the portrait was evident. It drew you in.

Before the reception was over I met Gordon and talked to him about his work, where he was headed as an artist and the things I do with video at Take Notice Productions. One of the things that stood out immediately was his choice of shoes that night. A multi-colored pair of beaded shoes by Donald J. Pliner, just as expressive and colorful as his paintings. I would later come to find out that he has an extensive collection of unique shoes and loafers. Once I showed him the short artist documentary video I did for Robert Wilson, weeks later we began talking about shooting one for him.

The process after that was an in depth discussion, a dialogue about ideas and concepts for the doc. He had a clear vision for what he wanted to convey about his art, we talked about these things, I took notes.

Original notes and questions on Stolen I.D.

Original Notes for Stolen I.D.

He already had the title for the doc, he knew how he wanted to open with quotes in text about his purpose as an artist. I knew I wanted to include a lot of b-roll footage of the inner-city environment, regular folks living. I knew I wanted the majority of it to be in black and white with small elements of color for emphasis of it’s importance. I knew the music I wanted to use was going to have a dark tone to it. I used the music from one of my favorite artists Gil Scott-Heron, the song Me and the Devil from his last recorded album just before he passed away last year. Later I would find out that Gordon and Gil shared the same birthday, that’s what I call one of my omens. We hung out, talked about art some more, current events, fashion, looked at other full length documentaries, we even went to the one weekend only Watch The Throne store in NYC that I wrote about in a previous blog (both of us are huge fans of Kanye West and Jay-z). I felt like one of the writers from the New Journalism movement that I read about years ago. After all that was done, I compiled all those elements together and this is what I came up with: Stolen I.D.:Fragmented, Colonized and Lost:

louboutin spikes, rollerboy, Basquiat, Picasso, HIV,

Fashion Night Out reaches out to Greenwich…The OTHER Greenwich

Fashion Night Out reaches out to Greenwich…The OTHER Greenwich

Most people are familiar with Fashion Night Out as the event that kicks off Fashion Week in the fashion capitals of the world, the big four being New York City, London, Paris and Milan. The event was created, by Vogue, just a few years ago to celebrate fashion throughout the world and at the same time support the economy. It would not be out of the ordinary for festivities to be going on in Greenwich Village in NYC, but the Greenwich I’m speaking of is Greenwich, CT. This year on September 8th there were several retailers in the fashion world that got together on the biggest shopping strip in Greenwich on Greenwich Avenue.

Most of the activity revolved around the efforts of Saks Fifth Avenue, who hosted the event, which was opened until 11pm for the night. Greenwich Avenue was transformed into a runway with models wearing the latest from the local retailers including Saks, Richard’s, Vineyard Vines, Ralph Lauren Rugby, Anne Fontaine, Lily Pulitzer, J.Crew, Yves Saint Laurent and many others. Take Notice Productions (myself and Matthew Notice) decided to go out and shoot some video of the event and take a few photos.

In addition to the runway show, we also spotted Glo Minerals giving free makeovers inside TD Bank, representatives from Stylelist.com taking surveys on iPads and even a performance by singer-songwriter Caroline Jones in the Chanel section at Saks. Event planners Hollywood Pop Gallery were even giving away a pair of tickets to a Jets game. Take a look at what we were able to capture that evening.

Sidenote: The Baltimore crab cakes served at Vineyard Vines were AMAZING!!!

Kanye West and Jay-z create a spectacle with Watch The Throne store and the Otis video Maybach

Kanye West and Jay-z create a spectacle with Watch The Throne store and the Otis video Maybach

It came as no surprise to me when I found out that iTunes sales for the Watch The Throne album had surpassed Coldplay’s previous record for first week digital sales. Two of the biggest and most influential icons in Hip-Hop teamed up and created a buzz around their album, in many ways. First by making the album available as a digital download only on the official release date and having the physical release cover designed by Riccardo Tisci creative director of Givenchy.

For the Otis video, which was directed by Spike Jonze, Kanye and Jay-z are shown walking with torches towards a Maybach that they completely restructured into a demolition car. This same car from the video was put on display at the “Watch The Throne store” in SoHo. The two setup a pop up shop for the weekend for viewers to see as well as an opportunity to buy the deluxe physical album with 4 bonus songs. Several projectors were setup throughout showing the Otis video as well as the artwork from the album. Security was very tight but I was able to snag this photo of the Maybach. Spotted in the back of the photo is painter Gordon Skinner. The car is to be up for auction with the proceeds going to aid the East African Drought Disaster.

Snapback Back… Snapback Back…

After fitted caps have dominated the heads of many for what seems like the past 20 years, it appears the snapback has finally made it’s way back. Here are a few snapbacks including probably the biggest selling Yankee Snapback and one by RockSmith inspired by Basquiat’s crown.

Abigayle Rockette: Featured Model On The Horizon – The Interview

Abigayle Rockette: Featured Model On The Horizon – The Interview

The following is an interview taken by BD3 for Dailymerger.com with up and coming model Abigayle Rockette.

Daily Merger (DM): How long have you been modeling and how did you first get involved?

Abigayle Rockette: I am 20 years old. I have only been modeling for 3 months. When I was a child, I did like little local ads and what not in the town that I grew up in St. Joseph, Michigan

DM: You now live in New York City. How has the transition been and how has it helped you pursue your career as a model?

Abigayle Rockette: The transition to the city has been great! Everyone that I have met so far, they have all been very nice and welcoming. If they know of someone in the industry, they try to help me out by putting my name out there. The town where I am from is very small. So there are not a lot of modeling jobs. NYC is the fashion capitol of the world so this is where I wanted to be…Right in the center of it all.

DM: Since you are in the fashion capitol in NYC do you feel drawn to do fashion photography? What are you favorite styles of modeling?

Abigayle Rockette: Yes I do feel drawn to fashion. My favorite style of modeling is def fashion! I mean think about it this way, who wouldn’t want to put on a crazy expensive couture dress that you would never go out in public with… because it’s too heavy to walk in?

DM: Have you had any previous experiences that you bring to you when modeling? For example, acting, dancing etc?

Abigayle Rockette: YES!!! I was a dancer back in the day. The types of dance that I am trained in are Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Modern, Pointe, Irish Step Dance, and Classical Indian dance. I started dancing at 2 years old with one of the local dance studios in my area. By the time I was 13 years old, I was with a dance company in Michigan. I stopped dancing when I was 18 years old, but it has helped me out so much.

DM: Is that something you think you may also pick back up on if you have the opportunity?

Abigayle Rockette: No. It wares your body out. I still love to watch it to this day though.

DM: You have a very distinct look. Of what ethnicity are you? I love the freckles.

Abigayle Rockette: Thank you… (BTW that is my look) If it was not for the fro and the freckles I would be ”just another model”. I am half German and half African American.

DM: Who are some models that you like, admire or respect?

Abigayle Rockette: Kate Moss! All that I have to say is, “chameleon”. Whatever the woman puts on, she transforms herself. And you have to love the fact that she is 5’6 and in her 30′s and still modeling.

DM: Chameleon because she can do any style?

Abigayle Rockette: Yes

DM: Is that something you aspire to do?

Abigayle Rockette: Yes… You should not aspire to do that if you model… you should be able to do that if you are a model. Modeling is not just being a pretty face you should be able to sell the item, brand, whatever it may be… to the consumer.

DM: Fill in the blank…I would love to be a model for__________.

Abigayle Rockette: hmmmm. Wilhelmina Modeling Management.

DM: Modeling is not an easy job. Aside from your beauty, what type of things are you doing to set yourself a part and get your name out there as a model?

Abigayle Rockette: My number one thing here in NYC is networking. I make sure I go out a few nights a week to meet people who could possibly help me. I stay in touch with them. More than 50 % of my jobs have come from networking.

DM: A photographer wants to collaborate with you. What type of things will you do and what won’t you do?

Abigayle Rockette: I do not do full nudes! Unless it would be for like the most famous photographer ever. I do however, do implied nude.

DM: What makes the best photographer for you?

Abigayle Rockette: The best photographer in my opinion is someone who allows me to be comfortable around them. Someone who does not just snap away his/her camera but gives me a bit of direction to perfect their vision for the picture.

DM: Who are some of the photographers you’ve worked with and who would you like to work with?

Abigayle Rockette: The photographers that I have worked with are Joseph Bleu, Jason Rifffe, Newray,  Cassidy Knight, Fransisco Matty, and my little sister Hannah Rockette.  If I could shoot with any photographer it would have to be, David Bailey for sure!  His work is AMAZING!

DM: Do you work with makeup artists or do you do your own make-up? What other collaborators are on a shoot?

Abigayle Rockette: Ha-ha the funny thing is, if there is a makeup artist on the set, I still add or take away some things that they did. Not all of the time, but the majority of the time. I have done shoots with stylists, designers, make-up artists and I have also done shoots with me just bringing my own clothes into the shoots with me.

DM: Name 5 things that you bring to a photo shoot

Abigayle Rockette: (laughs)
um
my mobile
mobile charger
coffee
finger nail polish remover
flip flops

DM: lol…flip flops

Abigayle Rockette: yes I grew up on lake Michigan… I live in flip flops there

DM: ok…now…Name your 5 best attributes as a model

Abigayle Rockette:

1. personality for sure
2. freckles
3. the fro
4. bronze skin tone
5. my really really really white smile

DM: hmmm…white smile….please explain

Abigayle Rockette: Haha. Sure…So when I was 16 I was addicted to Crest Whitening Strips. You are only suppose to whiten maybe once every day and I did it like 4 times a day. Then my teeth started getting sensitive so I stopped. Every since then, they have been permanently white.

DM: Haha…that’s funny
I know some people are envious

Abigayle Rockette: I smoke ciggs and I drink a lot of coffee and they will never change

DM: Well…I think you are beautiful…very talented and you have a bright future ahead of you.

Abigayle Rockette: thank you so much

DM: Lastly…What is the greatest piece of advice you’ve received thus far, and by whom?

Abigayle Rockette: Do what you want people may judge but you will be the one who is satisfied in the end – Myself.

Andre 3000′s clothing line Benjamin Bixby takes off

Andre 3000′s clothing line Benjamin Bixby takes off

Andre 3000 needs no introduction. The incredibly talented Hip-Hop artist and one half of the grammy award winning Outkast has been known as a tastemaker in fashion. The fact that the artist, formally known as Andre Benjamin, appears on many “Best Dressed” lists is a clear indicator of his fashion sense. It was to no surprise that the music icon named “The World’s Best Dressed Man” by Esquire magazine was launching his own clothing line in 2008. The clothing line, Benjamin Bixby, has a 1930s college-football look, consisting of chinos, polos, blazers, neckwear and more, all in old school tailoring and vintage Americana.

Benjamin Bixby can be found at fine retailers such as Barneys, Bloomingdales and Neiman Marcus in the US and stores such as Colette in Paris and Harrods in London. The clothing line made it’s debut on NY Fashion Week last year where he displayed his Fall and Spring  collection.

Andre can be seen in this video interview on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson sporting a brown leather bomber from the Benjamin Bixby collection. He also explains a bit about the clothing line.

Mos Def releases new album The Ecstatic as a T-Shirt???

Multi-talented Hip-Hop artist and actor Mos Def continues to cross boundaries or artistic expression by offering his latest album The Ecstatic as a t-shirt. Teaming up with California based clothing company LnA and music innovator Invisible DJ to create the Mos Def Music Tee.

The concept is simple. You purchase the the t-shirt which has the album cover across the front and the tracklisting on the back. The shirt comes with a hang tag and URL and unique code that give s you access to download the album from LnA’s website. All for one price of $39. Not a bad idea at all.
